Cuba Travel Options
The largest landmass in the Caribbean, Cuba is a Spanish-speaking country best known as the sole remaining Communist state in the Western Hemisphere. It is a safe place to travel, has an extraordinarily high literacy rate, and enjoys an advanced medical system. For five decades this Caribbean island-nation, embargoed by the US government, has endured in isolation. Take advantage of this special opportunity to join the small group of American citizens that has been able to visit this fascinating and rapidly changing country since the Cuban Revolution of 1959.
All creative travel programs to Cuba have a people-to-people focus: Each day there will be one or more meetings with Cubans: artists, writers, academics, musicians, dancers, foundation officials, craftsmen, and entrepreneurs. Visit legendary Finca Vigía, where Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote for more than two decades. Attend informal lectures on such topics as Cuban art history, the history of the Cuban Revolution, Cuban literature, Hemingway in Cuba, Santería, US-Cuba relations, and Cuba’s vibrant contemporary art scene.
In addition to daily arts and cultural exchange activities, participants will have the opportunity to sample some of Cuba’s famous paladares (officially sanctioned restaurants located in private homes), and, of course, to experience Cuba’s famous music scene. For those interested in collecting art, there will be opportunities to purchase art in a variety of price ranges directly from Cuban artists in their studios.
Most Cuba programs start and end in Havana, with an extended excursion to locations in the island’s interior, including (depending on the program focus) Playa Girón (the Bay of Pigs), Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Santa Clara, and the Oriente.
Explore Havana’s vibrant neighborhoods, including the remarkably preserved colonial seat of Habana Vieja, the crowded streets and funky folk art alleyways of Centro Habana, a variety of important historical sites frequented by Ernest Hemingway, and the elegant subdivided mansions in the thriving residential neighborhood of Vedado. Meet with Cuban writers and artists in Havana and Cienfuegos to discuss their work, the role of art in Cuban society, and the interplay between art, literature, and politics. Visit artists’ studios and galleries, hear street music and performances, go to a dance company rehearsal or a choral music concert, and spend time visiting Havana’s world class Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes with informative Cuban experts.
On an extended excursion into the island’s interior, explore historic towns and pristine beaches, visit tobacco plantations and alligator farms, spend a morning with fishermen or sugar cane farmers to learn about life in rural Cuba, visit historic Playa Girón, the Bay of Pigs, site of the 1961 U.S.-sponsored invasion, and discuss sustainable coffee-growing techniques with farmers on a hike to a forest waterfall.
