Custom programs in Cuba for artists, writers, musicians, and others

IMG_9740Create a custom program that combines a dynamic insiders’ exploration of the “real” Cuba beyond the well-known tourist sites with a special focus on Cuba’s vibrant contemporary literary, music, and/or art scenes. Join a small group of open-minded travelers exploring a rapidly changing country in ways not available to most visitors. Itineraries can include Havana, Viñales, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Playa Larga, Camaguey, Santiago, Holguín, and/or other stops in the island’s interior. Let us help you create an OFAC-compliant itinerary with the flexibility to take advantage of the spontaneous cultural interactions that make Cuba such an inspiring and exciting place to travel.

We’ll drop in on artists’ studios and galleries, attend dynamic music & dance performances, and visit many of Havana’s fascinating and lesser-known cultural hot-spots, including synagogues, neighborhood markets, and small and quirky museums. We’ll also visit some of the city’s better-known sites, including Habana Vieja (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Fine Arts Museum, the Cabaña (the Caribbean’s largest colonial fortress), the Necrópolis de Colón (one of the world’s greatest cemeteries), a cigar factory, and legendary Finca Vigía, where Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote for more than two decades.

In addition to the full itinerary compliant with the revised U.S. Treasury OFAC regulations, participants will have the opportunity to sample some of Havana’s famous paladares (officially sanctioned restaurants located in private homes), and, of course, to experience the city’s famous world-renowned music scene. For those interested in collecting art, there will be opportunities to purchase art in a variety of price ranges directly from Cuban artists in their galleries and studios.

One option is to set off into Cuba’s fascinating interior to the storied valley of Viñales. We’ll spend a few days in an evocative landscape of towering karst limestone formations known as the mogotes, exploring caves and tobacco plantations and perhaps taking time to sketch or paint. From Viñales we’ll head east to the lovely small city of Cienfuegos, which will serve as a base for continuing our cultural and artistic explorations and exploring a few of the unspoiled natural areas of Cuba’s south coast.

A note on lodgings: Your group will stay in well-located, privately run casas particulares (bed-and-breakfasts), lodgings that provide a comfortable base for daily cultural immersion and travel activities and allow for unparalleled access to real Cuban neighborhoods. Our casas particulares are simple and very clean, with excellent breakfasts served by our warm and welcoming Cuban hosts.

IMG_0226Per person cost varies but is comparatively quite reasonable, and generally includes all lodgings, ground transportation, local guides and experts, museum entrance fees, breakfasts, and most other meals. A mix of prepaid and independent lunches and/or dinners give participants the chance to get a break from the group and sample Cuba’s famous paladares (restaurants in private homes) on their own. Participants are responsible for booking their own flights from the U.S. to Havana. Questions? Contact us by clicking here

Space is limited to preserve the intimacy and flexibility of the experience, so we encourage you to reserve your place early. Please note that our itinerary in Cuba entails extensive walking. Participants should be in reasonably good physical condition.
